CHARACTER NAME: Helena Wayne/The Huntress
CHARACTER AGE: 24
SERIES: Pre-Crisis DC Comics
CHRONOLOGY: After Justice League of America v.1 185
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Sure, let’s go random
BACKGROUND:
Helena is the daughter of the Earth-Two Batman and Catwoman, born in 1957. Her young life was happy, spent learning a great number of skills and values from her parents, as well as her “older brother” Dick Grayson and more than a few things from her “Uncle” Clark and “Aunt” Lois. She displayed a talent for athleticism and a gifted mind from a young age.
Helena lost her mother at age nineteen when Selina was blackmailed by a former henchman into going into action as Catwoman. Her father, semi-retired from being Batman, went into action to stop these crimes (unaware that his wife was behind them), and in the chaos that soon followed, that same former henchman accidentally shot and killed Selina. Bruce, stricken with grief, hung up the cape and cowl that night, but Helena burned for justice. Already trained in criminology and gymnastics by her parents, creating her own identity was simplicity in itself. She brought the former henchman to justice.
Bruce himself went on to become the police commissioner of Gotham City, while Helena kept her identity as the Huntress a secret from him. She would later go on to assist and even join the Justice Society, helping them to catch a criminal syndicate using technology funneled from Pemberton Industries. The JSA would be instrumental in helping to later free Bruce from the manipulations of the Psycho-Pirate.
But tragedy would strike again, taking Helena’s father from her. A white-collar criminal put away by Bruce Wayne when acting as police commissioner, Bill Jensen, had somehow gained incredible power. With the JSA struggling against him, Bruce donned the Batman costume one last time and battled with Jensen, subduing Jensen, but at the cost of both of their lives. Wayne’s identity, along with those of Dick Grayson and Helena, would briefly become publically known, before the magical members of the JSA were able to make it so that the public believed simply that both Wayne and Batman had died that day.
As a member of the JSA, Helena was good friends with both Sylvester Pemberton (the Star-Spangled Kid) and Karen Star (Power Girl), helping the latter to establish a civilian identity of her own. She also became close to the Batman of Earth-One, dubbing him her “Uncle Bruce” and also shared adventures with the Batwoman and Batgirl of Earth-One.
In her personal life, Helena would become one of the youngest graduates from law school at age twenty-one, earning herself a place at the law firm of Cranston, Grayson, and Wayne. It was through here that she would meet the man she thought she could love, D.A. Harry Sims.
As a member of the JSA, Helena participated in several adventures teaming with the JLA of Earth-One, battling the likes of the Lord of Time, the Spirit King, the forces of Apocalypse and the Crime Champions of Earth-Two, as well as individual team-ups with her father’s Earth-One counterpart and other Bat-heroes.
As a solo heroine, Helena proved herself just as capable, battling the likes of Solomon Grundy and the Joker, as well as developing foes of her own. She would sometimes partner with Dick Grayson, the now adult Robin (who she would come to realize she had feelings for, but would ultimately decline to act on)
D.A. Harry Sims would later discover Helena’s secret identity, putting great stress on her relationship with him. Not long after this, Helena stopped a plan by the Joker, proving she was out of her father’s shadow and could stand on her own two feet.
Through it all, though burned by tragedy, Helena has continued to soar as a hero, bringing fear to the underworld of Gotham and hope to the innocent people.
PERSONALITY:
Like various other members of the Batman family, Helena is firmly dedicated to the cause of justice, both in-costume and out. As Huntress, she works hard to make Gotham City a safe place to be (while having the advantage of pre-Crisis Earth-Two Gotham being a pretty good place to start with), and as Helena Wayne she works just as hard to make sure the people she represented also got justice. Sometimes, the two things coincide. This, of course, can easily give way to obsession and burning the candle at both ends. Not having a “rich idiot” cover identity, but instead a hard-working lawyer, this can cause more trouble when she works herself to the point of exhaustion. Ironically enough, though, it was she who pushed for (and helped) Power Girl to establish a civilian identity and life outside the cape.
Like anyone in the costume set, Helena grapples with the pressures of a dual identity, both in the physical toll it takes on her, and in the psychological. Especially when friends such as Harry Sims seem to find the Huntress more hindrance than help. She often wonders if she’s really doing enough good, if she’s really capable of bringing the kind of inspiration to the citizens of Gotham City and the fear to its criminal element that her father did. She’s usually able to bury these thoughts, at least long enough to solve a case or grapple with a super-villain, and sometimes even into the post-victory high, but they tend to come back. She might not achieve modern-day Bat-family Bat-Broods, but she can still grapple with guilt and introspection.
In spite of this, Helena is also a remarkably together woman. Though much of her a life has marked by tragedy, she has not let the darkness consume her. She holds a life outside being the Huntress and tries to balance the two, not prioritizing one over the other. The loss of her mother and father still weigh upon her, but she continues to move forward with her life.
Family is very important to her, both by blood (and not quite blood in the case of Dick Grayson), and family by choice. She doesn’t have much “real” family left (really just her adopted “brother” and her other-dimensional “Uncle”), but she’s got a hell of a found family in the Justice Society. She’d go to hell and back for each and every one of them, no questions asked. She especially values her friendship with Power Girl and the two have the kind of close bond that her father and Power Girl’s cousin once did.
POWER:
Even without powers, Helena is a skilled athlete, acrobat, and fighter, along with possessing a keen legal mind and significant skills as a detective. She employs a small utility belt and a crossbow.
She will be arriving with the following super-powers.
1) Night-Vision: Helena will be able to see perfectly in any level of darkness, from dusk to lacking any illumination whatsoever. This will not affect her daytime vision. Unlike her other two powers, this is not under her conscious control; her eyes adapt as necessary.
2) Shadow of the Bat: Helena will be able to become degrees of invisible in reverse relation to the degree of illumination present. In daylight or most indoor light, she’ll be unable to become invisible at all. In complete darkness, she can become fully invisible. In low light, such as moon light or areas illuminated by poorly lit street light, she’ll be able to blend into the shadows enough to find from most casual and even some direct glances. This does nothing to hide other things, such as the sound of her breathing or her breath on cold nights. This invisibility extends to her clothing and any small objects she’s holding (such as her crossbow).
3) Gliding: Not true flight, but Helena can negate gravity’s pull on herself to glide through the air, with exact distance being partially determined by starting height and also by the presence of headwinds, tailwinds, and updrafts, and a top speed of . She is capable of steering herself, but can enhance her ability to steer by using her cape to help perform more complex maneuvers. She can reach speeds of approximately 30 mph for about a hundred feet under normal circumstances. While she can carry someone else while gliding, this significantly reduces her range and speed.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[The feed shows a scowling woman in a pointed mask, her features set and serious.]
It’s suspicious. All of this. Someone’s playing games with all of us. There’s no way they should be able to know some of this, know who we all are. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s keeping secrets.
[Something like a smile plays at her lips.]
But one thing I’m even better at? Solving mysteries. I was taught by the World’s Greatest Detective. And if ever there was a mystery that needs solving… it’s this one.
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
At least the city had gargoyles for perching on and brooding. The rain soaked into her costume and hair, but it was cold and clarifying, even as she picked the details of the slumbering city out in perfect detail. Was this how Doctor Mid-Nite saw the world, she wondered? She’d have to make it a point to ask him when she got back to her Earth.
When, not if. Alternate universes were nothing new to her; she’d made multiple trips to the parallel world of Earth-One, where the Justice League lived. And she knew that and her own native Earth-Two were but two of infinite Earths is the multiverse. This simply had to be yet another Earth. That meant there had to be a way back. She just had to find it.
That there were so many other people here, some of them as clever and some of them definitely smarter than she, and none of them had found the way back yet did not deter her.
But not before the deeper mystery had been solved. Who was running this place? Who had brought so many people here? How had they managed to give everyone super-powers? And, perhaps most importantly, what was the end game? She was too suspicious a person to believe their motives were altruistic…
There wasn’t nearly enough information, not enough clues. What pieces of the puzzle she had weren’t nearly enough to give her the shape of the sad-eyed puppies or the Van Gogh painting. She wasn’t even certain she had any edge pieces yet.
She clenched a glove hand. She didn’t like being used, didn’t like being given the run around. Even here, where she continued the fight against evil… No, she didn’t like it at all.
Helena took a step back and a deep breath, before leaping off the gargoyle. She’d done it a thousand times before in Gotham City, but now it was different. Rather than firing a Batline from her crossbow, she let her cape flutter behind her before grasping the ends of it and calling upon one of the strange powers bestowed upon her. Her cape billowing, she sailed through the air like one of the bolts from her crossbow.
Tonight... tonight was not a night for answers to those particular questions. But the night still belonged to the Huntress!
